The NKSC Academy was created as the primary development arm of NKSC, targeting players in the "golden years of learning" (U6-U12). Overall, the NKSC Academy programs are built upon USSF Best Practices and incorporate age appropriate methods and outcomes that use the following principles:
- Soccer training should, first and foremost, be fun
- Learning soccer should be a positive experience for all players
- Soccer training must be tailored to the capabilities of the age group
- Individual skill development is critical to the development of soccer players and should be emphasized over team skills
- The game is the best teacher and small-sided games are the best
- Players should be free and encouraged to take chances and experiment
- Too much competition and overly structured play at an early age leads to player burnout and dropping out of soccer.
- The parents who volunteer to coach are the future of the club.
- The Academy is designed to provide a foundation for both coaches and players.
How are teams put together:
-
Coach volunteers are the number one factor in team formation. NKSC strives to build teams around available coaches. A team will not be formed if there is no coach.
-
Coaches will have their child on the team they are coaching (unless they choose otherwise, please indicate preference).
-
Academy players will be randomly assigned to a team
-
Academy Coaches may select one assistant coach, and their child will be assigned to the team. Coaches should indicate their assistant coach on their registration form.
- Depending upon total enrollment, some multi-age teams may be formed to maintain reasonable team sizes.
-
Coaches will not be allowed to pick players for their teams.
Note: Additional uniform costs apply if required and can be ordered online during registration.
The Academy U6 & U7 program is played by children ages 5 & 6 as of August 1. Co-ed teams will be formed around a volunteer coach and that team will remain together for the 6 week season. Training sessions will be held twice a week at a central location. Training session format is approximately ½ training exercises & ½ small-sided games. Games will be in-house (i.e. NKSC only) allowing players the freedom to experiment, increase their confidence with the ball and have fun. Coaches receive "on the job" training from a highly qualified trainer who demonstrates training drills and techniques to the coaches who in turn demonstrate and execute them with their players.
The Academy U8, U9 & U10 program is played by children ages 7, 8 & 9 as of August 1st. Depending on the number of registered players & coaches, age groups may be combined. Group training sessions will be held once a week at a central location as is the case for U6/U7. Additionally, the coach will be able to hold an additional practice during the week. In-House games will be played on Saturdays. The season length will be 8-10 games, with the option of 1-2 festival days with neighboring clubs. The festival is provided to allow teams to play other clubs while giving them multiple game opportunities. The goal is to complete the season before November rains turn the fields to mud.
