People of the Year 2015
Posted Jan 23, 2016

If you weren’t able to attend this year’s NKSC Awards ceremony, you missed a great event celebrating some of the outstanding members of our Club including players, coaches, and administrators who represent our organization in the community.

We recognized the teams who represented us in league play as well as People of the Year awards.  So if you will bear with me, I’d like to share and reiterate some of the great things that were announced at the event.

Teams Recognition

In competitive Fall leagues, NKSC teams represented us well in the competition.

Congratulations went out to the following Competitive teams:

  • GU 13 NK Fury 1st place Classic 2 league with Coach Rob Lanfear
  • BU14 NK Havoc 1st place Classic  2 League with Coach Chad Walgren
  • BU11 NK Force 1st place Copa league with Coach Kent Hoepfinger

We also recognized BU18 NK Inferno and GU11 NK Chaos for placing in the top three teams of their leagues.

We’d also like to give a shout for our recreational teams this season. Our teams did well and demonstrated that NKSC has some great talent in its ranks.  In the Recreational Cup this fall, several of our teams went as far as the semi-finals, including Coach Becky Work’s BU12 team.

Sportsmanship Award

NKSC is a member of the local Northwest Sound Youth Soccer Association (NSYSA) that consists of all of the local area soccer clubs.

During each Fall Season League Match, our teams play within an NSYSA Recreational League (U11 & above), and each teams’ sportsmanship is evaluated by the opposing team.  At the conclusion of the Fall Season, the NSYSA Sportsmanship Committee evaluates all the sportsmanship data collected.

As mentioned at the Awards ceremony, we often hear from area club members, how NKSC teams are great sports on the pitch, always respectful of the other teams and officials when they play.

We were proud to announce that NKSC’s Girls U12 team won NSYSA’s Tom Higby Sportsmanship Award for their age bracket.  Congratulations to Coach Acuna and the team’s players:  Lourdes, Ava, Lena, Grace, Dakota, Hanna, Allison, Katherine, Alyson, Moon, Isabella, Hailey, Jane, Madeleine, Jaime, Lindsay and Lucy.  These young ladies demonstrate ideals of sportsmanship on the field with ethical behavior, fair play, and integrity.

Community Service Award

This year we introduced a new NKSC award for community service by members of our Club.  Often our teams are active in providing community service as a part of their efforts as a team for personal and team development.  We were proud to name Coach Gourley’s NK United team for this award for their service supporting the Salvation Army by raising over $1,000 towards funding the organization’s efforts in our community.

People of the Year 2015

We also announced the annual People of the Year awards given to outstanding individuals from our Club. NKSC sends out a survey to members for nominations to People of the Year awards in several categories.

Each of these individuals embodies the commitment to the youth of our community through the sport of soccer.   You’ll note that some of these individuals have recently become NKSC Board members.   We expect that you will see the influence of these dedicated individuals in the growth and evolution of our organization.

Although this is only listing the winners here, the nomination comments that led to their awards for People of the Year were extraordinary.

  • YOUTH VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR: Marlon Basco
  • BOYS MICRO/MOD COACH OF THE YEAR: Chris Leibold
  • GIRLS MICRO/MOD COACH OF THE YEAR: Jim Gillard
  • GIRLS RECREATIONAL COACH OF THE YEAR: Terry Cullen
  • BOYS RECREATIONAL COACH OF THE YEAR: Becky Work
  • GIRLS COMPETITIVE COACH OF THE YEAR: Aaron Vernik
  • BOYS COMPETITIVE COACH OF THE YEAR: Chad Walgren

[Ed.Side note, I myself was named for the Administrator of the Year award this year.  It caught me by surprise and though I formally accepted it, I share it wholly with all our NKSC Board members – past and present.  Each and every one of them volunteer and dedicate hours upon hours to help this organization achieve our Mission: To present the opportunity for area youth to learn the game of soccer, to encourage enthusiasm for the sport through the development of soccer skills, promoting fitness, experiencing the joys of teamwork while instilling sportsmanship through fair play.  So thank you and congrats to all of our board members. ]

The last award announced was the President’s Award.  Each year, the incumbent NKSC president names an individual member who is truly exceptional and reflects the highest ideals of NKSC demonstrating exceptional integrity, selflessness, leadership, and service to NKSC and our community.

This year, the President’s Award recipient is Jeff Black.  Jeff has contributed significantly to building community around soccer and specifically our Club in every action he undertakes.  As a former NKSC coach and our current field scheduler, he continually represents this organization with the grace and dedication. The last couple of years, he has been primary point of contact with the school district to keep our kids on local fields and is always willing to pitch in wherever he is needed.  You can always call on him for his perspective and knowledge to help our organization.  At the event, it was misquoted how long he has been involved with our Club – he has been volunteering with NKSC – not 10 but almost 20 years!

With that, let's offer another round of applause and congratulations to all of our winners as they are all well deserved.  We are proud to call you part of the North Kitsap Soccer Club.

See you on the pitch.
